Blue Ridge Literacy provides ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes to newcomer refugees Monday-Friday from 9:30-3:00pm. For the United Way Day of Action, we are seeking 2 classroom assistant volunteers per class. We have 4 classes total from 9:30-10:45am; 10:45-12:00am; 12:30-1:45pm; 1:45-3:00pm. Classroom Assistants will work directly with our Lead Teacher and will respond to the needs of this teacher. Before going into the classroom, the teacher will give you an overview of what he/she is doing that day, and then you will assist students 1:1 with worksheets or in small group work with materials provided to you by the instructor. At every step of the way, the teacher will let you know what s/he expects. Our learners vary in age and range from 22-60 years old and are from Afghanistan, Burundi, Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi, and Nepal. A: BRL is located in basement of the Main Library in Downtown Roanoke. To find our front entrance, please go around the left side of the library building and walk down the Elmwood Art Walk (Bullitt Ave) across from the Social Security building. You will see BRL's entrance on the right.
Q: Details of parking.
A: Parking is available by street only. 2 hr spots are available throughout the day, as well as a parking lot across the street that you can pay for. 2-hour street parking will be enough time for your service, but sometimes it is tricky to find a space. Allowing extra time to find one would be good!
