Located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke, the Science Museum of Western Virginia is a hands-on learning environment for both children and adults. We are a non-profit organization that boasts 12 exhibits, each focusing on a fascinating STEM topic, and our mission is to inspire our visitors to explore topics, passions and careers in STEM. Whether you’re local to the area or just visiting the city, make sure the Science Museum is on your list of must-see attractions.
We provide a public platform for local research and innovation to spark a curiosity in visitors and encourage the continued pursuit of knowledge. We offer in-museum and outreach programming for patrons and students, as well as a 50,000 square foot museum space full of hands-on scientific exhibits.
HOW TO VOLUNTEER
1) Fill out a SMWV Volunteer Application, found below!
2) Sign a Liability Waiver and give us permission to do a background check
3) Complete Virtual Orientation (provided to you after you've completed an application)
4) Use Hands on Blue Ridge to sign up for shifts!
The Science Museum of Western Virginia sees over 90,000 students, patrons, and visitors a year. We believe in empowering our community through experiential learning and simply put, cannot achieve our mission without the support of our incredible volunteers! Volunteers are an essential part of our work-force and allow us to continue our mission: provide a public platform for local research and innovation to spark a curiosity in visitors and encourage the continued pursuit of knowledge.
From performing docent work, such as greeting guests, answering questions and maintaining the organization of the museum floors, to working with our horseshoe crabs or assisting with summer camps, we have volunteer opportunities for all types of interests and skills. You are always able to find a role that suits you here at the Science Museum of Western Virginia!

What We Do
Once you have completed our Volunteer Application, you will be given access to our Volunteer Portal. There, you will have access to our Liability Waiver, our Background Check Process, and Virtual Orientation!
