Who We Are
Using over 20 years of evidence-based practices, the Partnership for Community Wellness (PCW), continues the work of the Prevention Council of Roanoke County by fostering the healthy development of youth and community by identifying risk indicators, and collaboratively engaging the population through research, education, advocacy and overall wellness promotion. Our assessment of youth risk behavior and protective factors creates opportunity to strengthen community wellness and resiliency in a measurable way.
What We Do
Our community service is constantly expanding and shifting to cover needs discovered through our research and fulfilled through a culture of partnering for solutions.
Currently, our programs and activities include:
- Administration, data management and analysis for the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in Roanoke County Schools every other year (even number years). This is done in partnership with data analysts at Virginia Tech and Radford University.
- Partnership with Roanoke County Public Schools to deliver in-classroom education surrounding risk behavior and alternatives.
- Partnership with the Peer Recovery Network at the Roanoke Valley Collective Response for administration of REVIVE! Narcan training to community organizations and businesses that express need.
- Partnership with Carilion Children's Adolescent Medicine and Student Health Services Education & Outreach to create curriculum and provide facilitation of the Incarcerated Mom's (I'M) parenting skills program at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
- Partnership with Mosaic Community Partners for the launch of an area-wide Recovery Ready Congregation Network (June 2023).
- Partner in the administration of the bi-annual Drug Takeback event in the Roanoke Valley.
- We work with area colleges and universities to offer internship opportunities.
- Partnership with local eLearning company Lobo Learning to create accessible online short-courses focusing on immediate health-related needs of our community, including digital wellness and brain based parenting.
- Curriculum development and facilitation of educational sessions for community organizations or businesses with a focus on prescription medication management & safe disposal, digital wellness, up-to-date & local drug trend information.
- Annual Retreat event to provide our partners with up-to-date information on what we are doing and how they can get involved.
- Referral for community outreach to services like the HOPE Initiative at the Bradley Free Clinic.
- Variety of community engagement events including: community yard sale, shoe drive, Star City StrongFest
- We bring educational opportunities to the community at low- or no-cost as they become available to us and are vetted by us and our subject matter experts.
- We are also a source of DeTerra drug disposal bags for those in need of them.
- We work with local community events including the Blue Ridge Marathon, USA Cycling Amateur Championships and Star City Strongman to provide volunteers and promote community engagement.
