Who We Are

You can choose to support daily public health activities, volunteer during emergencies ? or both. We understand that your work and personal commitments will determine your availability. Required training is offered in a classroom setting, via CD ROM, through self-guided study materials and online. It?s our goal for you to be trained and ready when you?re needed.

What We Do

The New River Valley Medical Reserve Corps (NRVMRC), a part of the Virginia Department of Health, serves the New River Health District which includes the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and the city of Radford in Southwest Virginia.New River Health District has an aggregate population of approximately 170,000 people. Virginia Tech University, Radford University, and New River Community College are also located in this area.Additionally, four hospitals: Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Lewisgale Hospital - Montgomery, Lewisgale Hospital - Pulaski, and Carilion Giles Community Hospital serve the population in this geographic area.The NRVMRC is an integral component of the Virginia Hospital Healthcare Association's Near Southwest Preparedness Alliance (a regional task force of 16 hospitals, health districts, and local/regional emergency managers)to help with planning/management of surge capacity in a local disaster, including assisting mass prophylaxis/vaccination clinics or other major public health needs.The unit partners with the Red Cross, VOAD, New River Community Services Board, OEM, Citizen Corps, and other resources to develop a coordinated response to a disaster.Our membership includes both medically-trained and non-medically trained volunteers.
