Who We Are
Kids Soar opened over 30 years ago as a safe place for children in the neighborhood to come to one afternoon a week and to receive a hot meal.
Fast forward 30 years and we are now a holistic, multi-generational program. Our children’s after-school literacy program runs 5 days a week. We serve children at two different sites. Our Mountain site is located at Trinity United Methodist Church in Downtown Roanoke and our Lincoln site is located at the Villages at Lincoln Community Center.
From about third grade onward, students read to learn instead of learning to read. Having the ability to read at grade level by third grade is vital to children’s education and future.
At Kids Soar, our focus is on working to end the cycle of poverty by strengthening children and their families through offering literacy and academic education as well as teaching life skills for a successful future.
Teaching a child to read is about more than moving from one reading level to the next, it is about empowering children for a lifetime of success: because every child should be able to read!
What We Do
Literacy After School Program: Monday-Friday 2:30-6:30pm for K-5th grade with an emphasis on children reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Children receive a snack, help with homework, literacy instruction, extracurricular activities (art, music, Christian education, US history, and STEM), story time, and a hot meal each evening.
All children are currently scholarshipped into our program. Parents are required to give an hour of their time each week by attending family night. We partner with other organizations to bring to our parents skills they are in need of, ie: financial literacy, parenting skills, community awareness, nutrition, etc.
