Do you love the feeling of getting your hands dirty for a good cause? Come join us as a landscaper volunteer!

Landscaping Volunteers will assist with property maintenance. They will help the staff of RMHC with keeping the hedges trimmed, the fences free from vines, the weeds pulled from the garden beds, and will assist with blowing and edging the patio and sidewalks. In addition, they will also assist with planting and maintaining plants as needed.

As a Family Room Volunteer, you will provide a warm welcome and supportive atmosphere to families coming to use our Ronald McDonald Family Room. Our Family Room is located inside Carilion Hospital on the 14th floor. It provides a break from the hospital setting for the families of pediatric patients. 

 

Family Room Volunteers are crucial in ensuring this room is a restful and peaceful environment for our guests. The Family Room is open only when a volunteer is present.

Volunteer Qualifications & Training – To be eligible to be a Family Room Volunteer, you must:

Be a least 18 years of age Complete an RMHC-SWVA Volunteer Application (printable volunteer application) Be interviewed prior to your acceptance Have the ability to interact and communicate well with families and staff Complete Carilion’s volunteer training and requirements* Complete orientation provided by RMHC-SWVA Family Room Coordinator

*Carilion Volunteer Requirements:
– Background Check
– Flu Shot
– Take 30-minute online class
– TB Blood Test/TB Questionnaire

Volunteer Hours – Volunteers are needed for 3-hour shifts, 7 days a week:

9:00am – 12:00pm 12:00pm – 3:00pm 3:00pm – 6:00pm 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Volunteer Responsibilities – Volunteers are responsible for:

Welcoming and registering new guests Answering the telephone Ensuring that guests are following the Family Room policies Providing a friendly and supportive atmosphere Maintaining a clean and orderly room Fix Snacks & Coffee Complete minimal record keeping

There are two types of House Volunteers. The first is a regular House Volunteer who is tasked with answering the phones, leading activities in the house, organizing, light housework and providing office support. The second, more involved opportunity, is a House Companion. The House Companion is the right hand of the House Manager on duty. In addition to the regular house tasks, the House Companion can check-in guests, accept donations, utilize the cash register, and perform room checkouts. Both positions require you to be comfortable working independently or with limited supervision to accomplish given tasks.
