Volunteer: Museum Front Desk Volunteer

Looking to get out of the house? Wanting to help a worthwhile organization? Volunteering in the museum gift shop is a perfect and easy opportunity to do both.

This volunteer opportunity is straight-forward and fairly easy, but it makes a world of difference for the small museum staff. We are looking for a few long-term volunteers to help at the front desk for the Roanoke History/O. Winston Link Museums.

We have visitors not just from across the country, but across the world so volunteers get to hear about visitors' interesting connections to the Roanoke area and to Link. Volunteers also get to watch the trains along the tracks outside the museum. Some days there are only a few visitors so volunteers are welcome to bring a book with them for while it is slow. When we do have visitors and shoppers, hearing stories from the guests and many times answering their questions with recommendations about things to do or places to eat in the area make the volunteer's shift go by so fast.

The primary tasks of volunteers would be to interact with visitors through the sale of admissions and gift shop merchandise and assist museum staff with some museum operations. Only minimal training is needed and will be provided. The gift shop volunteers are a vital part of the organization and make it possible for the very small staff to be able to focus on the operation of the museum and the conservation of Roanoke's heritage.

Our current needs are for Tuesday Mornings (10am to 1pm), Tuesday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm), Thursday Mornings (10am to 1pm), Thursday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm), and Friday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm).

We are not able to accept volunteers needing to fulfill court required community service hours.

Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Our Impact Model

Research shows that cross-class relationships are the biggest predictors of social mobility. And financial margin increases the odds of college persistence four-fold.

We partner with schools and youth organizations to recruit committed high school and college students into our community. Then, by removing the barriers the keep well-resourced adults from connecting with under-resourced young people, our technology builds bridges across socioeconomic strata, enabling people like you to empower students like Diego R.

Diego R. joined Backrs so he could pursue his dream of becoming a biomedical engineer. Thanks to his talent, hard work, and the support he's received from his backrs, he's well on his way to making that dream a reality. As he explained:

"My brother was born with Chronic Kidney Disease. He’s the man who gives me the strength to pursue Biomedical Engineering and become an accomplished technician. I strive to make the lives of those who suffer like him better. I want to be the change he needs to be healthy."

All of the students in our community are driven to build a better world; when they're given the resources to do so, everyone around them benefits.

The Backrs Experience

Being a great backr isn’t about grand gestures or having all the answers. It’s about the small things: sharing a word of encouragement. Passing along a helpful resource. Making an introduction. These actions make a big difference--take it from some of our current backrs:

"As a backr, I love the opportunity to support and mentor my three proteges as they grow and develop. I feel grateful to be able to guide and shape their future in a positive way. Through Backrs, I have been able to watch them grow into confident and capable individuals, and it has given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I can't put into words. It's made a tremendous difference in my life to see them achieve their goals and know that I played a role in helping them get there."

- Ahmed Dawood, Marketer at Apple

"Backrs gives me an opportunity to utilize my expertise to provide mentoring and support to students. Even though my students are a couple time zones away, I have the flexibility to connect with them on my time and have been dedicated to checking my app weekly at minimum to engage in conversations and answer questions. Its exciting to celebrate their wins and talk about future plans. Mentoring was very impactful in my life so it gives me joy to give back in this way."

Volunteer: Administrative Assistance, Clerical & Social Media Skills

Points of Diversity has existed since 2014 as an all-volunteer non-profit with an all volunteer Board of Directors.  As our programming expands to offer more training, education and opportunities to participate in cross-cultural activities and as we reach out to more neighborhoods within Roanoke Valley's localities, it is increasingly hard to find the time to keep up with administrative tasks including letter writing, program planning and, in particular; social media promotion. The executive Director does not have any more than 40 hours a week to supervise, set up and make community connections.  As a non-profit we cannot budget for paid assistance unless we are awarded a grant.  Applying for a grant necessitates clerical assistance to write up applications which is time hard to find.

The Prevention Council of Roanoke County is a community coalition, formed in March of 2001, which is committed to promoting the healthy development of the Roanoke County community, with a special emphasis on youth.

As a community coalition, the Council exists as a partnership of parents, youth, school, faith, law enforcement, business, medical, and other community leaders. The ultimate goal of the Council is to identify the critical risk behaviors and substance abuse issues that threaten the health and development of our local community. We believe, however, that public health issues, such as alcohol or marijuana abuse, do not exist only in a school or social setting where youth frequently congregate; in order to protect our youth from risky decisions, it is essential that all prevention strategies adopt a community wide approach. To that end, the Prevention Council of Roanoke County utilizes the Strategic Prevention Framework Process, as taught by the national training agency, CADCA, in support of all Drug Free Community Support Programs.

Greenvale School has provided affordable childcare to the Roanoke Valley since 1934. The majority of people served by Greenvale School are low income working families who need affordable childcare in order to work or attend school full-time. In 2010, 95% of our families received financial assistance to cover the cost of their children’s care. Greenvale School helps families who are already helping themselves, and together we work toward two goals: building stability and financial independence for parents; and providing a stimulating, nurturing environment for children that will prepare them to succeed in school.

Greenvale School's mission is to provide affordable, accessible, top-quality, developmentally appropriate childcare and educational services for children of working parents, according to each family's ability to pay. By promoting the highest standards of education and responsible behavior, Greenvale School's program cultivates the growth of each child to his or her full potential. By providing a comprehensive range of services, Greenvale School supports parents' efforts to build a secure and prosperous future for their families.

Greenvale has several board positions open currently.

Please contact LeeAnn Linkenhoker, Executive Director at llinkenhoker@greenvale-school.org or 540-342-4716.

Volunteer: Crisis Advocate

SARA Crisis Advocates offer support, information, and assistance to survivors of sexual violence using an empowerment model. Our CAs respond to calls on our 24-hour crisis hotline and request for in-person advocacy at local hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and some court proceedings. CAs sign up to be on call for at least four (4) shifts per month through a cell phone system. The most important characteristics of Crisis Advocates are maturity, reliability, compassion, and empathy.

We provide training for Crisis Advocates, which is an intensive 40-hour training program where participants learn about dynamics of sexual violence, responding to survivors, working with different populations, and other skills. Crisis Advocates must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to the program for at least one year. Because volunteers may be asked to respond to a local hospital or police station, we also ask that volunteers have reliable transportation and be able to respond within one hour of dispatch. Additionally, Crisis Advocates receive ongoing training and case management.

To apply, please go to https://sararoanoke.org/get-involved/volunteer/crisisadvocates/.
