Needs From: HandsOn Blue Ridge

The 82nd Airborne Christian Soldiers Food Pantry, at 728-A Church Ave SE Roanoke VA, is an affiliate of Feeding Southwest Virginia, Inc and predominantly serves disabled veterans. We need volunteers, any day, from 830am - 230pm Monday - Saturday, to sort donated food into boxes for curbside pick up by individual who need food. Sometimes we need volunteers with good driving records to pick up food from supermarkets in a 17' Feeding Southwest Virginia truck beginning at 645am. Call Rayma Mary Mills at 540-915-1518.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia needs 25 volunteers each day (Monday, March 23 - Thursday, March 26) from 10a – 1p to assist with packing USDA Food Boxes for families in need during this crisis. 

Volunteers must be 16 years old or older and wear closed-toe shoes.

Volunteers are to report to our Salem Warehouse at 1025 Electric Road, Salem VA 24153.

Senior Meal Box Packing

Every 3rd Thursday and Friday of each month in our Salem warehouse, we assemble 2,000 boxes of non-perishable, shelf stable food items for low-income seniors. We do this in two shifts from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. We need groups of 25 for each shift for this activity.

Must wear closed-toe shoes and minimum age is 16

Every 2nd Thursday 11:00am – 1:30pm 

Assist with loading the Food Truck at the Salem Warehouse located at 1025 Electric Road with veggie bags and food boxes to be distributed to seniors who reside at Morningside Manor Apartments. Once the food truck is loaded, volunteers will then drive their own vehicles to Morningside Manor located at 1020 13th Street, SE, Roanoke, VA 24013 to unload truck and assist with food distribution to the senior residents.

Volunteers working at Feeding America Southwest Virginia rescue food by inspecting and sorting dented cans, crushed boxes, or other superficially damaged food to ensure the food inside is safe and meets both Federal Government and Feeding America guidelines.

We strive to make the experience a rewarding and bonding time for volunteers. Shifts are generally 9a-12p and 1p-4p during the week, though Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. may be arranged.  Volunteer opportunities are listed on: faswva.volunteerhub.com

Must have the ability to stand  and lift light loads. Orientation and training is provided at the beginning of your shift.

Help prepare healthy meals for the feeding programs for children from our new kitchen. Volunteers will be needed Monday - Thursday from 12:30 -3:30 p.m. and Fridays from 10:30a - 1:30p to help prepare simple meals at the Community Solutions Center kitchen, 2328 Melrose Ave, Roanoke, VA.  No prior experience is required. The volunteer positions will be cook, food prep and quality assurance.  Closed-toed shoes are required and the minimum age is 16.  

PARKING: Please park on the left side of the building.  You will be going in the side door marked "Volunteer Entrance." There is a buzzer outside the door should it be locked.

Repack bulk food items for distribution. Food items such as beans, rice, etc. are repacked into smaller bags (2lbs or less) to be redistributed.  This is a family oriented event and youth under 16 may participant with a guardian.  Although shifts are available Tuesday - Friday 9a-12p and 1p-4p, arrangements can be made to volunteer after school for 2 hours. There must be at least 10 participants, so this is a great opportunity for youth groups, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.

Want to get hands on and help feed kids after school?

Volunteers are needed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to serve meals to children from the Cafe to Grow food truck.  Truck Volunteers are asked to meet the truck on site at the following locations:

Tuesdays
Stop 1: Preston Park School (3142 Preston Ave. NW, Roanoke). Volunteers needed from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.

Wednesdays
Stop 1: Williamson Road Library (3837 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke). Volunteers needed from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Stop 2: Jackson Park Library (1101 Morningside St. SE, Roanoke). Volunteers needed from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m.

Thursdays
Stop 1: Eureka Park (1529 Carroll Ave. NW, Roanoke) Volunteers needed from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.

Stop 2: Boys & Girls Club (1714 9th Street SE, Roanoke). Volunteers needed from 5:15 to 6:30

Minimum age is 16 and must wear closed-toed shoes
