Who We Are
The BGCSWVA provides youth with daily, well-rounded programming that is fun, age appropriate, and educational, combined with one-on-one relationships with caring adult professionals. On a daily basis, members participate in Power Hour (homework help), mentoring, tutoring and physical exercise activities. On a weekly basis, members participate in Career Launch (college and career preparation), community service, SMART Moves (alcohol, drug, and teen pregnancy prevention), TOP (Teen Outreach Program), and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programming. All BGCSWVA programs build self-confidence and self-esteem to foster a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence. Parent engagement activities, such as family dinner nights, recognition nights, and parent trainings, are held on a quarterly or as needed basis. The BGCSWVA currently supports five site locations including one stand-alone Club on 9th Street in southeast Roanoke City, three school sites in Montgomery County and one school site in Franklin County. In 2018 we served approximately 850 young people that predominantly come from low-income and single parent households. Any child between the ages of 6-18 is eligible for membership into our organization. Our annual membership fee is $15 per child and no child is turned away for inability to pay.
What We Do
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia enables all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Since its inception in 1997, the BGCSWVA has positively impacted the lives of over 19,000 young people. BGCSWVA is part of a nationwide affiliation of local autonomous organizations of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) that offers daily access to a broad range of after school and summer programming. The three youth outcome areas that our programming focuses on are academic success, good character & citizenship and health lifestyles.
